So who exactly is Ros?
From an early age, artist Ros Lee has been fascinated by art and design.
In 2004, Ros was selected amongst thousands to receive a three-year National Arts Council scholarship to study art and design in Japan. Undaunted by the fact that she did not speak a word of Japanese, Ros packed her bags and headed for Tokyo. She majored in Textile Design, learning traditional Japanese dyeing techniques, large-scale silkscreen, weaving, felt and fiber art.
Upon graduation, Ros continued to live in Japan, first landing a job as Lifestyle Product Designer at Accent Corporation where she was given a chance to create her own line under the name GLEE. In 2011, Ros took up the mantle of Design Consultant for New York-based cosmetic brand; in the same year, Polkaros was launched. And yes she is a true blue Singaporean!
An Interview with Ros
Ros’s Inspiration and her Japanese Ceramic Journey
I started pottery at an early age as my family ran pottery business so after school and weekend activity included playing with clay and ceramic painting. My inspiration comes from beautiful colours, crafts, things and people around me. My design is a combination of influences from Japanese traditional crafts with modern zakka goods.
The term for Japanese ‘zak-ka’（雑貨）or ‘many things’ actually refers to everything and anything that improves your home, life and appearance.
Views on the Singapore Ceramic Art Scene
I’m glad to see more young people showing interest in ceramics these days.
