Being asked to join in at Naughty Nuri’s at 12 o’clock, my initial thought was, “That sounds like it could be the name of a strip joint. Did he mean 12 o’clock midnight?” Turns out I’m just totally out of the loop on this one because anyone who’s been to Bali or heard of their friends adventures in that region would’ve known about Naughty Nuri’s famously good food.
According to the online sources, Naughty Nuri’s was humbly started in 1995 by Ms Isnuri Suryatmi, 53, and her late American husband, Mr Brian Aldinger. The name, Nuri was set after Ms Isnuri for her love of cooking. The modest roadside barbecue stall, housed in a wooden shack in Ubud – ‘Warung Style’, has since grown into a franchise with eight outlets in Indonesia, Malaysia, Macau and now Singapore. After just one meal there, I can safely say that I’ve become well acquainted with the delicious Indonesian cuisine they serve and I’m just dying to get back there with a big group. This is definitely a place where the more the merrier, the more the naughty-er applies – just don’t invite any of your strictly vegetarian friends, unless you want to convert them, in which case this might be the perfect place to do that!
One thing that I love about this place is that the portions are really generous, especially at the reasonable prices. I was especially impressed by the large Maggi Mee Goreng dish which comes with fried maggi noodles, 1 pork & 1 chicken skewer, prawns, sunny side up egg, “keropok” fish crackers, and “achar” pickled vegetable. The key signature lies with the Indonesian sweet dark sauce that balanced with chili’s spiciness level. The mee goreng is also slightly saucier therefore it’s either you love it or you might think otherwise… however you have to note that this is definitely not your usual spicy Indian dry mee goreng where you get the wok-hei (wok’s fragrance). But another good point is that you can get this entire dish of finger-licking good Indonesian yumminess, all for only $11.80++! And if you’re very hungry you could probably finish this entire meal alone, but then you won’t be able to try anything else and where’s the fun in that?

Luckily there were three of us at the table so we basically ordered enough food to feed a whole teenage soccer team. I mean, we just had to try the entire menu to report back to you, right?
Another dish that turned out to be surprisingly tasty to me was the Crispy Pig Ears. My Taiwanese parents brought me up to appreciate similarly strange delicacies like chicken feet and yes, at some point in my childhood I do remember tasting pig ears and not being completely appalled by it. However, growing up in a mostly Western environment (USA), I quickly grew to dislike these indigenous Asian foods. And yet, when the deep-fried pig ears were placed before me I just had to have a taste – and they were simply divine. I guess you can’t really go wrong with anything crunchy covered in spicy curry powder and lime.
There are seriously so many amazing dishes served here that I could go on forever, but I’ll try to stick to the highlights, like the St Louis Half Rack. I’m not kidding when I tell you that just writing about this is making my mouth water so much I have to swallow just to keep myself from drooling. I have no idea what it is that they are putting in their BBQ sauce (they wouldn’t tell me. It’s a secret recipe, duh!), but they’re doing it right. These signature ribs are just the way they should be, packed with intense flavor and all the meat falling right of the bones. The sauce is not as spicy as you think it would be as well.
If you have to balance all these meat with some vegetables so you can feel slightly better about your diet, try the Burnt “Porn Corn” that’s basically Grilled Corn with lemon and chili. I’ve always been a sucker for corn on the cob and this one is to die for. I still don’t get all the all the sexy references from the restaurant’s name to putting the word “porn” in the corn dish (maybe just because it rhymes?), but to be quite frank with food that tastes this good they could call it anything they want.
Everyone loves a good chicken, and the Lemak Chili Party of braised chicken leg in turmeric coconut gravy is a good choice if you want to satisfy any chicken cravings. The meat is tender and moist in this classic Indonesian dish.
Or if you like something that is Indonesian x Westernise grill, you can opt for the Soy Glazed Chicken wings which are stuffed with chorizo, shishito peppers (a type of sweet capsicum) and cheddar cheese that are simply tasty and juicy.

Of course, this being also well known as a martini bar in Ubud Bali, we had to try their famous drink – Nuri’s Signature Martini made with coconut pandan and yogurt, topped with burnt pineapple wrapped in a pandan leaf. It was the perfect Asian flavored martini to pair with all the scrumptious food that we enjoyed.
So the verdict is, Naughty Nuri’s is not a nightclub in the red light district. In fact, sex just may be the last thing you think about after stuffing your face with some of the best pork in town. You will want to bring friends so you can try more dishes because the portions are big and everything is just so yummy!
