When I first heard about this place I imagined it to be one of those hot stone massages where smooth, palm-sized rocks are placed on your back. So I was a little surprised to find it was nothing like that.
Ganban-yoku (岩盤浴) therapy comes from Japan and it’s more like a hot stone bed that you lie down on while it emits heat throughout the part of your body that comes into contact with the bed. Infrared rays and negative ions are released through the stones to help your body detoxify through perspiration.
Other Benefits with Ganban-yoku
According to what I was told, it is suitable for children from as young as 12 years old to Senior Citizen. Senior citizens can have tremendous effects on their overall well-being and vitality. Generally, older adults who experienced the therapy are more alert, mobile and independent. It can also help to reduce pain and stiffness, improve energy levels and increase strength. Every session will benefit the heart and circulatory system as the metabolism will be greatly boosted with improved blood circulation.
Personally, I find it extremely relaxing and beneficial for my body.
So How Does It All Works?
Well, the shop is conveniently located in Far East Plaza (Orchard Road) on the far end of the 2nd floor. Upon entering, you remove your shoes and place them in the shoe cabinet.
Then you pay for the treatment and receive a set of locker keys, matching top and bottom, and two towels. You can also purchase a face mask if you want to enhance the experience. As a promotion, if you like their Facebook page and Instagram, you can have a complimentary face mask. If you need to use the toilet, now is the time to do so as the bathrooms are down the hall in the mall just outside of the shop.
Next, you will be led into the changing room where your assigned key matches a locker for you to store your personal belongings and clothes.
It is good to arrive a few minutes earlier so you have time to take a quick shower if you want to. You’ll be sweating a lot during the treatment, but the sweat that comes out of your body is described as “silky sweat”, basically it leaves no sticky residue. In fact, the skin on your face and body is left feeling smooth and silky afterward. It is also recommended that you do not shower for 2 hours following the treatment in order to get the most out of your session.
There are several different rooms with space for 2 persons or even up to 8. It’s great for a ladies day out with a group of friends. Just make sure to keep the chatter levels down so you don’t disturb anyone. Inside the treatment rooms, you will find the hot stone beds with little separator walls and tiny pillows. To start out you can lie on your back with a towel underneath in case the stone is too hot for you. After a few sessions, you will get used to it and even enjoy direct contact with the bed. After about 10 minutes, you can turn around to lie on your stomach. Just make yourself comfortable and keep turning and changing your position to get the most out of the session for your body.
If you have any muscle or joint pain you can press that part of the body against the stone to relieve the pain. My favorite position is to be on my back while hugging my legs close to my chest, that way the heat travels right to my lower back and it’s very soothing. After your 60 minutes is up, you can hang out in the changing room or the lounge to cool down a bit. I like to change into the towel because the therapy outfit is usually soaked with sweat by this time. Don’t forget to have some water or tea to replenish and re-hydrate your body.
