Following the successful launch of its inaugural ‘100% people’s choice’ food and beverage awards in 2015, HungryGoWhere Awards is back with an exciting season this year in search of Singapore’s best food and drinks over 21.
A leading online destination for all things food-related, HungryGoWhere pioneered the island’s first and only people’s food choice award with an impressive count of over 40,000 votes garnered across 27 categories in 2015. Final winners include hot favourites such as Chye Seng Huat Hardware for “Best Café for Coffee” and Wild Rocket for “Best Modern Singaporean Restaurant”.
Wong Hoong-An, Co-Founder and Sales Director of HungryGoWhere, says: “It is very encouraging to see the sheer volume of participation for last year’s HungryGoWhere Awards and we can only expect this year to be even better. The voter’s choice awards celebrates the hawkers, restaurants and dishes that resonate deep in the hearts and stomachs of Singaporeans as we give them due credit.”
Media’s Restaurant Food Trail
Prior to the award ceremony, we had the privilege to visit three of the restaurants in Singapore.
Our first stop was at Mellben Signature, located at Tanjong Pagar Plaza. Presented to us was their Signature Buttery Crab. The three words to describe would be savoury, creamy and sweet. Not forgetting to dip the sauce with deep fried crispy mantou!!
Next stop for our main dinner, we tried Escape Restaurant & Lounge’s Buffet Dinner at One Farrer Hotel & Spa. It has quite a fair mix of local and international ranging from your cold seafood, sashimi, Live pasta segment, North Indian to local chicken rice. What is unusual would be the Seafood Live Cooking. For those of you who do not take cold seafood, you can get the chef to prepare it hot for you using the zi char style with three types of sauce to pick from; namely chilli crab, salted egg and oriental classic. The salted egg sauce was a disappointment as it lacked of salted egg flavour. I will recommend the chili crab sauce instead. Another item to go for is their roasted beef, while for those who doesn’t beef, roasted duck and chicken rice will be another to go for (**explore yourself for the rest of the dishes). For dessert, their durian pengat is the one to go – only for durian lovers!!
Finally, the last but not least stop was Tiger’s Milk at the rooftop of The Club Hotel, 28 Ann Siang Road, for their cocktails and shared bites! Fresh seabass marinated with lime mixed with spicy chopped aji amarillo (a type of chili pepper – capsicum), red onions and grilled corns as well as some nuts reminds me of one raw fish appetizer prepared by Chef Will Meyrick during his Private Masterclass held years ago. Best item and must have item will be their Waygu Beef Rib Skewer served with chimicurri. Thick savoury fatty meat, it is so tasty!!
For the drinks, I prefer Pisco Sour (Pisco, lemon and egg white shaken to a frosty finish with a dash of angostura bitters) as it is a kick on its sourness while for Piscorinha (Shaken with calamansi and passion fruit, sour plum and served with crushed ice), it falls towards the sweeter note.
IT IS VOTING TIME
