Happening this evening to Sunday 26 November, Musical Theatre Limited proudly presents ‘My Love is Blind’. Starring veteran actor Benjamin Chow (‘Forbidden City’, ‘Tango’, ‘RENT: The Musical’, ‘The LKY Musical’) alongside visually handicapped performers, ‘My Love is Blind’ throws a spotlight on the ambitions and achievements of the visually handicapped.
‘My Love is Blind’ is a musical inspired by a true story of Tan Guan Heng who is a blind author and social service volunteer. He was also an ex-Rafflesian.
The story follows the trials and tribulations of Guan, a young man who loses his sight in the prime of his life at the age of 28 shortly after his graduation from the (then) University of Malaya. Unable to find a job, he set up his own successful book business and even went on to become an active leader of the blind and disabled. My Love is Blind is based on his eponymous semi-autobiographical novel, which Tan hopes can raise awareness and rally public support around the disabled community. Feel the heartwarming and emotional of Guan Heng during the musical performance as he overcomes great adversity, garners his inner strength and support from the people around him while he seeks to achieve success and find his love of his life.
Musical Theatre Limited (MTL), a registered arts charity founded by Stella Kon, will be lending their musical talent to the dialogue about social inclusivity with their newest musical, My Love is Blind. Helmed by established playwright Stella Kon, the MTL team has casted visually handicapped performers alongside established actors and musicians, recognising their talents and providing a boost of self-esteem.
“Appearing in My Love is Blind was a new and exciting challenge. It allowed me to show that I am a true performer and encouraged me to push further,” Said Wan Wai Yee, a blind performer who played the character Sophia in the 2016 showing of My Love is Blind.
My Love is Blind was first performed at the Ulu Pandan Community Centre in 2016 to stellar reviews by the audience, and the team is currently raising funds to produce a full-scale musical in an effort to reach out to more people. The musical will challenge conventional stereotypes about the visually handicapped and highlight that the disabled are as intelligent, talented and competent as the able. Unfortunately, many remain hampered by their disabilities in searching for employment.
My Love is Blind will be showing from the 23rd to 26th November 2017 at School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA) Drama Theatre, with tickets sold by SISTIC. President Halimah Yacob who is the official Patron of Musical Theatre Limited will be the Guest of Honour during the Gala Night of the musical “My Love is Blind” on 24 November 2017.
