Is 999.99 the price which you need to pay?
NO, it is not. Down the street of Keong Saik Road, you will find ‘a piece of gold bar’ that is of the purest 999.99 grade. Yes that is the name of this Modern European Restaurant, Five Nines, which opened last December.
999.99 is all about the purest and finest form in quality of ingredients being used, the service which they provide and the presentation. Five Nines prides itself on its ability to serve guests luxury ingredients at affordable prices. What you are actually getting are mostly seasonal which same goes to the techniques being used, mainly from around Europe and Japan. You get to choose to pair your favourite dishes with wines while not burning a hole in your pocket.
Here we have Executive Chef Masanao Saito from Tokyo, Japan, who has began his career as a Chef de Partie in an Italian restaurant in Tokyo, working on the antipasto and dessert stations. He worked through the ranks and moved to Sweden, Stockholm, where he was the Head Chef of the Japanese Embassy. He served Japanese Kaiseki and French cuisine to Japanese and other dignitaries. Chef Masanao has since moved to Singapore in 2014 when he was heading up a Japanese Restaurant in Cuppage Plaza prior to helming Five Nines.
The area is not very spacious but still good for dates and parties. You either sit right in front of the bar counter where you get to watch live cooking and preparations or you can choose somewhere with more ‘privacy‘.
Burrata & Tomato Salad
Fall in love with the garden of radiant tomatoes, the sweetness of all 3 paired (fresh, sun-dried & jellied) with saltish creamy burrata cheese. The most interesting aspect of this dish will be the tomato jelly which melts in your mouth while the juicy blood orange actually cleanse your overall palate, bringing the citrus sweetness to another level rather to a down bitter sourish after taste. It is simply refreshing to start your meal with this salad before anything else.
Seabass Carpaccio & Truffle Salsa
Fresh thinly sliced translucent seabass is another must have dish to start off with. Jellied ponzu and black truffle gives another twist to this capaccio dish rather than the usual ‘sauce‘. There is a fine balance between both the sashimi and Japanese-European style flavours.
King Crab Croquettes
Crab, potato and bechamel sauce rolled in breadcrumbs and deep fried until crispy.
Served on a truffle mayonnaise.
Looking for really creamy Japanese croquette? This is one to go for. Enjoy the crispy exterior and beware of the pipping hot cream inside! On a side note, perhaps some crab meat can be added in to enhance the texture within the cream with feel of real crab.
Beef Tenderloin & Foie Gras
Pan fried striploin of beef with seared foie gras, pomme puree and spinach with pine nuts. Served with a beef jus.
Medium Rare to go for your Tenderloin Steak or ask it to be medium if you find it a little to red after cutting it. Both are actually wonderful in the way its being prepared with beefy juice intact and tasty exterior. You definitely will love to get a bigger foie gras but for this price, it is definitely reasonable. This item is only available for dinner.
Grilled Swordfish & Spring Onion
Vibrant green spring onion puree with griddled swordfish and charred spring onion.
Different parts of belly gives you different kind of texture for its amount of fats that are found in them. The swordfish is well cooked with moisture well retained and char flavour on the exterior. A suggestion was made for fatty fish lovers and that is to get a fattier belly which allows one to get a sweeter buttery taste and ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ texture after grilling.
Dessert is a must to have after meal if you have a sweet tooth. First a classic tiramisu with mascarpone cheese and coffee, no alcoholic but it is really good.
Pistachio & Chocolate Cake
The brown Pistachio is way more fragrant with intense flavour than the usual green pistachio – that is what I like about this pistachio ice cream. The cake is moist with nutty texture within, it goes well with the variety of fruits, puree and chocolate bits. Overall this Pistachio dessert’s sweetness is just right.
